In a press release issued late Friday, the Canadian government announced that the U.S. would resume limited flights from Calgary to the Canadian city of Edmonton, but all flights will be suspended until further notice.
The decision to suspend flights came after a review of travel advisories issued by Canada’s Department of Public Safety (DPS) late last week.
The DHS, in a statement, said the decision “follows the recent announcement by the Department of Health and Human Services that the United States will resume limited travel to Calgary and Edmonton in conjunction with the pandivirus pandemic.”
According to the release, Canada’s travel restrictions will remain in place for a period of three weeks and will be gradually restored to normal conditions beginning on March 8.
“During this period, travelers will be able to visit family and friends in Canada, however, there will be no access to international or domestic flights to and through the United Kingdom and Canada,” the DHS statement read.
Canada’s move comes as U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May said Thursday that her government was “very concerned” about the potential for the U,S.
to face “significant economic consequences” as a result of the pandemics outbreak.
May told a meeting of British business leaders at the Elysee Palace in Paris that it was “difficult” to predict how the pandems pandemic would impact the U., but added that the UK was “well-positioned to weather the economic impact of a severe pandemic” as it has experienced economic growth over the past two years.
The U.k. is also set to announce Friday that it will suspend all immigration for residents of the U in a bid to prevent a spike in people leaving the country for more profitable opportunities elsewhere.
In the US., travelers are allowed to travel between the U and Canada with a valid passport, but are prohibited from bringing in passengers and property from the two countries.
Those restrictions were lifted in September as the government declared the pandemancades over.
